Why People Check Reddit Before They Buy (and Before They Trust AI)

People check Reddit before they buy because strangers there give honest, specific answers, and AI tools have noticed. Studies of AI citations rank Reddit among the most-cited sources in ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and Perplexity. For brands, that means what Redditors say about you travels well beyond Reddit. The way to win it: advertise openly, answer questions, and never fake the conversation.

Why do people add "reddit" to their searches?

Adding "reddit" to a search often gives better results than any SEO blog, because you get real people describing real experiences. Redditors knew this trick years before the mainstream picked it up, around 2022.

The people answering are managers, specialists and professional hobbyists in your category. They love the topic enough to engage with it daily, and they'll give you the most honest answer, or point out your flaw.

Why do AI tools cite Reddit so much?

Reddit threads look like the questions people ask AI tools: real people answering real questions in conversational language. A Peec AI analysis of 30 million sources found Reddit was the most-cited source across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. See Search Engine Land.

A separate 2026 Semrush analysis of 325,000 prompts, reported by eMarketer, also found Reddit was the top-cited domain across ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. The exact share of citations varies by study, engine and method, so treat any single percentage with caution. What the studies agree on is the direction.

Why Reddit shows up in AI answers

What does this mean for brands?

A conversation about your product on Reddit can show up in a Google result, then in an AI answer, then in front of someone choosing between you and a competitor. The path looks like this: Reddit discussion, then Google search, then AI answer, then brand discovery.

It also explains who sees your ads. About 55% of Reddit's website users weren't logged in in August 2026, so much of the audience arrives from search, not from the app.

How a Reddit thread reaches a buyer

Can you get your brand talked about on Reddit?

Not quickly, and not by cheating. Being searchable and getting positive feedback on Reddit matters a lot, and there's no shortcut unless you invest in people. A short chain that works:

  1. Make something people like.

  2. Introduce it with ads aimed at the right communities. See Reddit ads targeting.

  3. Keep comments open and answer questions openly. See Reddit ad comments.

  4. Help in the communities you advertise to, following their rules. See Reddit organic vs paid.

  5. Check the lift in branded search. See brand search lift.

Getting your brand talked about on Reddit

What shouldn't you do?

  • Don't use AI to write posts and comments about your company. People on LinkedIn teach this, and accounts that followed them got banned while their brands got negative sentiment.

  • Don't use fake or hidden accounts. It can break advertising laws in the EU and USA, and Reddit's rules. If you do either of things - don't expect it to last. No one can play the Reddit audience for long.

Why are ads the honest way in?

Ads put you in front of the right communities, label you as a brand, and start conversations you can join in the open. See The Reddit Ads System and Reddit ads for beginners.
