Reddit's free-form ad generator is a beta tool, launched in June 2026, that writes Reddit-style ads using your website and related Reddit conversations. It can also suggest headlines and images for specific communities. It's a useful starting point, but in our experience AI-looking creative underperforms on Reddit, so treat its drafts as a first version, not the final ad.

What is the Reddit free-form ad generator?

Free-form ads look like a normal Reddit post and can mix text, images, GIFs and video. The generator drafts one for you by learning from your website and from long-form Reddit posts on related topics. Alongside it, Reddit launched tailored creative assets, which suggest headlines and image variations for different communities and audience types.

Does AI-made creative work on Reddit?

Not by default. In our Case study: Reddit ads for app installs, AI-generated memes got a 0.73% click-through rate, while real photos got 1.14%. Redditors spot generic, AI-looking creative fast.

The generator is different from generic AI images, though: it learns from real Reddit posts. That makes it a better starting point than a blank page.

How should you use the free-form ad generator?

  1. Use it for a first draft and angle ideas

  2. Rewrite the text in your own words, with real details only you know

  3. Use real product photos or gameplay, not AI images

  4. Make a different version for each community you target

  5. Test it against an ad you wrote yourself

When should you not use it?

  • When the draft makes claims you can't back up

  • For technical audiences who expect precise detail

  • When it sounds like marketing copy instead of a Reddit post

What makes a good free-form ad?

A free-form ad is judged like a Reddit post, so the rules are the same as for a good post:

  • One message. If the ad tries to say three things, people remember none.

  • The first lines do the work. In the feed, people see the headline and the start of the body before they click.

  • Real details beat adjectives. A number, a photo of the real product or a short story about how it was made says more than "amazing" or "innovative".

  • Always upload a thumbnail. Free-form ads don't make one for you, and without it the ad shows no picture in the feed.

  • Write for one community. What works in a gaming subreddit sounds wrong in a parenting one.

How do you rewrite an AI draft so it sounds like Reddit?

Use the generator's draft as raw material, then edit it in this order:

  1. Cut every marketing word: "revolutionary", "seamless", "game-changer" and the like. Redditors spot them instantly.

  2. Start with the problem the community talks about, not with your product.

  3. Add one detail only you know: a price, a test you ran, a mistake you fixed.

  4. Say one honest limit, such as who the product isn't for. It makes the rest believable.

  5. End with a soft next step, like "happy to answer questions in the comments", instead of "Buy now".

If the edited version still sounds like an ad, it will be treated like one. Our post on why AI-generated creative flops on Reddit explains why.

How should you test generator drafts against your own ads?

  • Put the edited generator draft and an ad you wrote yourself in the same ad group, with the same targeting.

  • Run 4 to 6 ads per ad group so Reddit has enough to compare.

  • Give each ad at least 4 days before you judge it.

  • Keep comments on, reply fast, and watch what people ask. The questions often become your next ad.

  • Judge by conversions and cost per result, not by click-through rate alone.

Reddit free-form ad generator: FAQ

Is the free-form ad generator free?

It's a tool inside Reddit Ads Manager. You only pay for the ads you run.

Do AI-generated Reddit ads perform well?

In our experience, not as-is. Real photos beat AI memes in our app installs case study. Use AI drafts as a starting point.

What are free-form ads?

Post-style ads that mix text, images, GIFs and video, with a headline up to 300 characters and a long body.

Do free-form ads need a thumbnail?

Yes. Free-form ads are the only format where Reddit doesn't create one for you, so the ad shows no picture in the feed without it.

Should comments be on for free-form ads?

In our experience, yes. Free-form ads look like posts, and a post with an active comment section looks more real. Someone just has to answer the comments.
